Antique 1891 souvenir booklet titled “The White Squadron,” produced by the Woolson Spice Company of Toledo, Ohio as a promotional item for their Lion Coffee brand.

This booklet commemorates the White Squadron (Squadron of Evolution), a group of modern steel U.S. Navy warships that represented the Navy’s transition into a modern force in the late 19th century. These ships—including vessels such as the Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Dolphin—were known for their distinctive white-painted hulls and played a key role leading up to the Spanish-American War. The booklet was issued in connection with the squadron’s 1891 tour of the Great Lakes.

Contents include period descriptions and printed photographic images of notable ships such as the Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Boston, among others, offering a snapshot of early U.S. naval power and maritime history.

The booklet shows age and handling wear consistent with its age, including staining, discoloration, edge wear, and general patina. It features a string-bound format typical of late 19th-century promotional ephemera, with pages remaining present.

A great collectible piece of advertising history, military memorabilia, and late 19th-century Americana.

Condition

The album shows significant signs of age and wear, including discoloration, staining, and some damage to the cover and pages. The binding is intact but shows age. Overall, it is in fair condition for its age, with the content still legible and visually interesting.
